Walk and Talk – Bats

September 10, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

£10.00 – £12.00

Join us in September to hunt for bats on a unique guided night walk through the arboretum.

This informative walk will begin in our handcrafted roundhouse as your guides offer introduction to the characteristics of the different bat species who make their home here.

You will then explore the arboretum on a leisurely paced walk, armed with bat detectors so you can ‘hear’ and track any bat activity.  By September bats have finished raising their young and are starting to think about mating. Many of our bat species also start travelling to swarming sites (areas where lots of bats from a wide meet up to mate) at this time of year, making it a great time to head outside in search of them!

After the walk we will gather around the fire for hot beverages before departing.

There are limited numbers available, so please do book early to avoid disappointment!

Knowledge required:

Perfect for beginners!

Group size:

15 maximum.

Minimum age:

We think this event might be most suited for those age 10+. However you know your child best, if you think they’re able to be calm and quiet during the walk then they’re welcome to join at any age.

Other information:

We operate from a basic woodland venue with rustic furniture (such as benches and camping chairs) around the Roundhouse so do feel free to bring additional items for your comfort. This is a non-catered walk so you will need to bring along any drinking water, food and snacks you may desire. Hot drinks will be provided at the end, please bring a keep cup to help us be green!

Tortworth Forest Centre is a Community Interest Company, working with limited resources. Sometimes we may have to cancel or postpone walks and courses if they are less than 50% subscribed. We try our hardest to keep events running wherever possible. You can help us by spreading the word to friends, family and colleagues. If an event is cancelled a full refund will be offered.

Planning your visit:

  • This event is weather dependant
  • Meet by 7pm for a talk before the walk at 7.30pm
  • Due to the natural pathways the site is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues
  • With this in mind most of our pathways can be slippery and muddy at times. Please wear appropriate footwear and long layers
  • We have a compost loo on-site
  • There is no running water or electricity here
  • Please find detailed information about how to find us, and more information to help you plan your visits here.

Become a Friend of Tortworth:

Support our ongoing conservation and community work with an annual pass. Friends of Tortworth can attend unlimited Visitor Days for a year whilst supporting our fundraising efforts. Every year we need to raise £100,000 to plant trees, train volunteers, pay staff, maintain tools and our minibus so that people without car access can attend our wellbeing groups. Attending events or becoming an annual pass holder helps support the ongoing conservation work at Tortworth. That means you’re investing in the wellbeing of others whilst doing something for you! We’ll call that a win win! Find out more here
