Tales from Tortworth Arboretum – Samantha’s story

Join us as we celebrate our 10th year with heartfelt stories from those who’ve been part of our journey. Here we hear from Tuesday Volunteer, Samantha.

I had a good feeling about the project when I saw the volunteer ad, the website and posts on Instagram. I was very happy to be offered a place on Tuesdays’ ‘Woodland Management’ sessions. The sessions have been enjoyable, challenging and restorative – physically active but paced really well and everyone is encouraged to work within their limits.

The site is very beautiful and peaceful and the roundhouse is a nice place to talk and drink tea. The group leaders are friendly and very supportive, sharing their knowledge and expertise and enabling us to learn and engage at our own pace.

Diversity is valued, people are accepted as they are, and respect is encouraged. The sessions are a good combination of familiarity / structure and variety / learning new things. Being in the woods, with the Trees and with Wildlife is deeply comforting and inspirational. The sessions are vital for me in my life right now as a disabled person recovering from severe mental health difficulties.

I am very grateful for the sessions and gaining hands-on experience in Woodland Management – thank you.
