Tales from Tortworth – Naomi’s story

Tortworth Arboretum is such a wonderful and special place. In 2018 I moved from Lancashire to Gloucestershire and within four weeks I’d seen a poster advertising an event at the Forest Centre. Over the years I’ve been enjoying spending time there ever since.
There is something magical about the familiarity of nature which makes a new place feel like home. When everything felt so new, as I was trying to settle in, finding somewhere I was welcomed and could meet new people was so important.
Initially I joined the Woodland Women sessions run by Tortworth’s founder, Bec, then the Mother Daughter Journey, and Native Trees courses, as well as visitor, tree planting and other days. It’s been wonderful to develop new skills, such as tree identification, basket weaving, creating natural plant dyes and medicines. I’m keen to keep on learning.
Traditional skills fascinate me and a recent Bush Craft session with Kelly, about Nettle Cordage, was great and has me wanting to explore more.
I love to be outdoors and learn about what’s around me, to take a step away from technology and fully experience the world through my senses. Visiting Tortworth Arboretum has helped to enhance my connection with nature and myself. Providing a place of peace and calm when I’ve needed it.
With a passion for nature, creativity in all its forms, and a love of supporting others, I am excited to become an Event Volunteer and join the team at Tortworth Arboretum. It’s been inspirational to see how the place has evolved, changed and grown. I look forward to being part of the welcoming spirit of the Forest Centre.
