Over 100ft high, this impressive conifer stands at the entrance to the arboretum. It was planted in 1853, the year the 3rd Earl of Ducie inherited the estate and began planting the arboretum.

Native to the Himalayan mountains, the deodar cedar is sacred to hindus and has been used in medicine. The name deodar comes from ‘devadāru’, a Sanskrit word that translates to “timber of the gods.”

Hindu female oracles have used the smoke from deodar wood for divine inspiration.
