Golden Larch

Pseudolarix amabilis

  • Accession number: 1000-098
  • Native to: China
  • Common names: Golden larch

Pseudolarix amabilis is a deciduous tree, with soft needle-like leaves which turn bright golden-yellow in the autumn. The female cones are distinctive, resembling a small globe artichoke.

Named after its beautiful golden leaves in the autumn. This plant is commonly used in Chinese herbalism, where it is considered to be one of the 50 fundamental herbs. The wood has also been used for furniture, boats, and even bridges.

Pseudolarix is not closely related to true larches (Larix), instead it is more closely related to Keteleeria, Abies (firs), and Cedrus (cedars). The genus is monotypic, with only one species remaining.
