October volunteer day

A massive thank you to everyone that came along yesterday – we got so much done!

Despite the weather it was a great day to be outdoors. In the morning volunteers planted a tree along the hedgerow, then built a new dead-hedge out of the brash from a fallen tree. This now allows space for our spring flowers to shine, plus also retains some habitat for wildlife.

Another group tackled a large clumping bamboo, that was spreading far and wide. After giving it a trim the hard work began, digging out the rhizomes with mattocks and spades. This took a lot of energy but will be the best approach long term. We aim to return again each year to keep it under control.

Flowing a delicious lunch we headed back onto the footpath, armed with loppers, brushhooks and slashers. Bramble was knocked back and wingnut was cleared making space for potential plantings.

It was a lovely day and as always the amount we got done was really impressive.

See you next time!
