June Volunteer day

A big thank you to everyone who came today. We got loads done, quite impressive!

In the morning we spit up into groups and walked all around the arboretum in search of our reptile mats, which have all but disappeared amongst the undergrowth. We managed to find half of them (along with a few slow worms), the other mats are out there somewhere..

Whilst lunch was warming on the fire, we started on the young Sycamore saplings, which had grown into a dense carpet shading out all the other plants. The afternoon was spent clearing an area of Wingnut trees which had taken over a large part of the slope down to the river. We made quick work of them, stacking the smaller ones for future firewood, and snedding the larger ones (taking off the smaller side branches) to be chopped up at a later date. It was fun work and felt really rewarding.

Our next volunteer day is going to be on the 10th of July – when we will be clearing a new pathway through the undergrowth – hopefully see you then!

We also have a tree climbing day coming up next weekend, for those feeling adventurous!
