Tales from Tortworth arboretum: Helen’s Story

Hi my name is Helen. I have been coming to the Thursday group for up to two years. From the day I first came, I was anxious, scared, not socialised with people for a long time. I was made welcome by all and most importantly I felt safe to be me whether I was having a bad day or good. I have always loved being outdoors but I have learnt so much in the group. The forest is incredible all weather and seasons. It’s okay to have a wobble as everyone just gets it. It’s a safe environment. To cook on the fire, I have learnt so much and for me engaging with nature helps my recovery.

I am an older person and it’s great, the age range. I love being around the young ones, we share knowledge if we want to. The activities are fab. You name it, we’ve done it. Craft from nature, candle making, sewing, foraging, walking, so much more. I take all my things home with me that we have created and when I’m a bit low I look at bits and say yes you have done that.

The group has been a life saver for me, no judgement.

Thanks, Helen.
