February Volunteer Day

Due to the recent storms, our volunteer day had to be rescheduled this month. Instead we met for a much calmer work day yesterday, with some wonderful sunshine and lots of spring flowers starting to come through.

Following the high winds there was much work to do, with three trees down and many others damaged by falling branches. The main focus of the day was a large specimen birch that had fallen next to the public footpath. With care, we slowly cleared the area of fallen branches and began to take apart the crown and side branches, which will be processed for firewood.

Still unidentified, we believe this to have been a monarch birch with an impressive 2.3 meter circumference. It was a sad loss, but on a brighter note, we now have an extended planting area giving lots of potential for new trees.

A massive thank you to everyone that came along, we are really looking forward to working together over the year ahead.

See you in the woods!
