Tales from Tortworth – Debbie’s story
Join us as we celebrate our 10th year with heartfelt stories from those who’ve been part of our journey.

In 2016 I joined a wonderful Wildwomen gathering at Tortworth Arboretum, the first of many activities I would take part in. Little did I know then how important this beautiful green weald with it’s ancient oaks, exotic conifers and friendly goats, would become to me.
The woodland became my escape from the exertions of life, helping me reconnect with the natural world and my own soul. I joined in with the woodland management groups, helped at open days, cooked over the fire, and took part in a tree survey. I found friendship and physical release and enjoyed giving back to this place that gave me so much. I particularly remember the prickly briars underfoot in the meeting area after they were first cut back. With the briars gone, a sea of snowdrops now pop up signalling the end of winter, giving way to soft grass through the warmer months. In 2020 I joined the management team as Finance Officer for a couple of years, helping me gain confidence in the working world after spending a few years as a mum.
I live many miles away and now have less time to spend at the woods but it still occupies a big part of my heart. I do try to stop there now and again for a rejuvenating walk amongst the trees.
