Tales from Tortworth – John’s story
Join us as we celebrate our 10th year with heartfelt stories from those who’ve been part of our journey.

I started volunteering at the arboretum around 6 years ago, at a time when I was feeling a little isolated and lonely. I wanted something that was practical, outdoors and worthwhile. Volunteering at Tortworth has met those needs.
There is always a sense of short and long term satisfaction on volunteer days. Short term it is great to see how much we achieve in the day. Be it clearing brambles, rhododendron, clearing fallen trees, restoring paths, best of all planting new trees for the future. Long term the way the woods have been developed over the last 10 years is fantastic. Each month you can look around and see the new trees establishing themselves, more areas cleared, with snow drops and blue bells spreading into them. It also makes it worthwhile seeing the expanding programme of events and groups using the arboretum.
From the start I was made to feel welcome and useful. The sense of friendship and teamwork has always been a key part of volunteer days. The wide range of ages and experience of the volunteers also contributes to the enjoyable atmosphere. I look forward to volunteer Sundays each month. Nature, companionship and achievement, what more could anybody ask for.
