Flying axes? Must have been our Autumn Open Day

Wow! What a buzz there was at Tortworth last week. We are still glowing with a warm fuzzy feeling after a wonderfully special Autumn Open Day and Community Tree Planting.

Perhaps our busiest open day to date, we counted over 200 people through the gates. The sun shone and the autumn trees dazzled as folks of all ages tried their hand at axe-throwing with Avalon Axes, listened to Dora Darling‘s gorgeous songs in the roundhouse, went on guided walks around the tree collection with Gary and Jake, planted new trees, made autumn garlands with Into the Woods Forest School, did seasonal scavenger hunts, had a go at fire-starting, and sipped fresh coffee by the fire.

The woods were alive and it felt vibrant, yet the word that came up again and again when talking to people was how relaxing and calming the place is.

All round lovely and wholesome event. Thank you for having us!

My first visit – have really enjoyed it. Will definitely return!

Felt the calm air of the activities (walk, axe throwing and beautiful singing) helped drop other thoughts and distractions. Just lovely to be in the arboretum. Thank you!

Loved the wild feel, children of differing ages really having fun.

The site still retains a wild feel, even though next to a hotel. The children on site really enjoyed their visit.

Many thanks for a wonderful day; learning and creativity and relaxing.

Great! Welcoming volunteers were fab. Thank you!

The guided walk with Gary was informative and enjoyable!

Brings back memories of 20 years ago brining my children here. The team have done a great job restoring the woodland.

This special day was made possible thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Wessex Water Foundation.

We are working to restore The Dell at the Tortworth Arboretum. It is a private woodland, so if you’d like to visit then please come along to one of our Visitor Days or Open Days, or consider volunteering with us.
