September Volunteer Day

We had another lovely day in the woods today, thank you to everyone that came along and put in so much energy!

Our main task of the day was to plant out three new additions to our collection – a Red-vein Enkianthus (Enkianthus campanulatus), Snowy mespilus (Amelanchier lamarckii) and an American witch hazel (Fothergilla major). After lots of digging we soon had them in their new positions, adding a good wire fence to keep the deer away. It was a great pleasure to make use of some of the new areas volunteers have cleared over the last few months.

Elsewhere in the site, a team with scythes helped clear a large area of nettles and bramble, another area we hope to plant in the near future. The last task of the day was to re-establish the hidden pathways through our clumping bamboo, which also gave us the opportunity to bring the goats some tasty cuttings!

As well as our Sunday Volunteer Days, we have a team of dedicated volunteers who take part in our monthly Woodland Management Days on Tuesdays. We’ve written an update about their work over recent months to acknowledge all their hard work and say a big THANK YOU.  You can read about it on our blog.

Next month we have our  Autumn Open Day with Community Tree Planting on Saturday 16th October, followed by our Volunteer Day on Sunday 17th October.  Please respond to this email if you would like to come to the Volunteer Day, and email bec@tortwortharboretum.org if you’re free to help out at the Open Day.

See you in the woods again soon!
