The arboretum at Tortworth gets a new lease of life with major funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which will see more community days, volunteering opportunities and two year plan to plant new exotic trees.
This January, Tortworth Forest Centre CIC has received a £100,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for an exciting two year heritage project to manage the arboretum at Tortworth, and bring in more people to enjoy the benefits of time in nature. The Woodland Heritage Project will see regular open days as well as more volunteer opportunities, a series of talks open to the public, and an exciting new planting plan which will ensure the survival of the tree collection for future generations.
Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project aims to encourage a wide range of people to engage with the natural environment for physical and mental health and wellbeing, to learn about our environment and contribute to the management of the historic woodland.
Details will soon be announced about Tortworth’s weekly volunteer days, which take place every Tuesday in the woodland and will include tool training, as well as opportunities to relax and enjoy the beauty of the arboretum throughout the seasons.
Open days and a series of educational talks will be held, with opportunities for the public to visit the arboretum and make use of new tree maps and guided walks.
The arboretum at Tortworth is an unusual and important collection of exotic trees planted by the Ducie family in the mid 1800’s, as well as hosting veteran oaks and sweet chestnuts. A period of undermanagement left the tree collection at risk of dying. Volunteers have been working since 2014 to manage overgrowth and we are now ready to start planting the trees of the future, with support from experts.
Bec Cork, founder of the project, said “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players. Our volunteers have spent many hours each month restoring the arboretum and we can now begin the next phase of the history of this unique tree collection.”
